In Finland we have this swear word ”p*rkele” which is considered the most powerful swearword both locally and globally. Originally it meant the thunder god but nowadays it is more like the d*vil or a demon. It has no direct tr*nslation because it is such unique a word. Isn’t that crazy??

G*dboard isn’t that powerful. Estonians use it with even less power than fingols so it is pretty c*strated in the profanity sense

I actually once developed a linguistic hierarchy based on swear words
Tier 1 - excr*ment
Tier 2 - s*xual organs and their application
Tier 3 - judeo-christian spirituality
Tier 4 - ancient/pagan spirituality
The higher the tier, the higher the ranking. H*ll which is derived from Hel and Helgård and its other local variants is in tier 3 as it nowadays has been appropriated into the christian punishment realm instead of its paganic origin. There is also another ranking system which is basically a score where you add the tier numbers together every time a language has words like ”sh*t”, ”f*ck” and ”h*ll” you have 1+2+3 =6 as its score (the higher the better)

This needs an update as I’ve been more exposed to middle eastern profanities via my friend. It seems the local usage is more focused on saying bad things about other people’s (most often female) relatives which I previously put in tier 2 as ”son of a b*tch” is related to using s*xual organs, but the use of such words is so prominent within the neo-European circles I’m considering making them a new tier. A logical place would be to put them between the old tiers 2 and 3 as it is above animalistic urges and shows recognition of familial relations, but lacks the finesse of imported spirituality. This update would give English the score of 10 and Finnish the score of 15

Can't help but notice that racial slurs are completely excluded from your ranking system. Those would honestly probably be the strongest and most offensif in an IRL real life context.

I think it depends on the context tbh. Some people definitely use slurs as (super powerful) swear words in certain situations.

That is true but as a product of my surroundings I have produced a highly local system which treats them as separate categories. We could take the new tier 3 with all that ”you’re mother is a wh*re” related stuff and split it into:
Tier 3 - slurs based on assumed/imaginary traits
Example: I don’t know if you have a brother and if you do I don’t know who he’s attracted to, but I can still call him a f*ggot
Tier 4 - slurs based on factual traits
Example: I’d go tell a black guy he’s a n*gger

HOWEVER!!!!!! There is a problem here. Say we met someone with dark curly hair and a slightly different nose. If we were like ”f*cking k*ke”, would we be in which tier?? For a while I thought the youtuber Farrell McGuire was jewish but he’s not. If someone antisemitic commented that to him based on his appearance it would be a misplaced assumption but a logical conclusion inferred from empirical evidence available. The same applies for example if a big woman is called a tr*nny despite being XX. Splitting the new tier 3 into 2 tiers (even subtiers) would produce a shaky system

One thing worth noting is that my system is not based on power and impact but variation, cultural heritage, complexion, plasticity etc. One can say ”s*atanan p*ska”, but ”s*tan’s sh*t” doesn’t really make sense. This means finnish cursing can be thought as having more plasticity than english cursing

Furthermore, when it comes to adding slurs to the hierarchy, what about objects related to swear words?? The friend I mentioned earlier wanted to say ”wh*re” less frequently so she started calling everything ”*nal plugs” instead. In ”v*ttu” she also occasionally replaces the i with an a and say ”vattu”, raspberry, instead. Considering all these things would make the system too heavy to function as a simple ranking system
>>
>>151963
I think swearing and curse words are fairly unique in a lot of languages (for instance, there are a lot of swear words/phrases in Dutch involving cancer), and Finnish itself is a very unique language (to say the least), so it only makes sense that swear words in it are unique as well.

English has its own pretty amusing constructions though, and you can get pretty creative with it. You can say stuff like "holy shit, this fucking shit is totally fucking fucked, fuck me sideways, for fuck's sake" and it will make total sense.

Well, those are just euphemisms, and I think whether they can be considered swear words sor not also depends on the context, yeah.

You've given it quite a bit of thought, I see. Pretty amusing.

English has those yeah, but I’d argue those are based on the fact that ”f*ck” is both a noun and a verb with a concrete meaning which lets one combine it easily with other words and phrases. Saying ”f*ck me sideways” makes sense while ”sh*t me sideways” (both a noun and a verb too) doesn’t as the latter would involve being eaten and digested etc., while the former also carries the classical degrading idea that to be f*cked is bad (the hierarchy of male and female roles etc.) so it becomes very potent when used by a guy. The *nalysis of the word ”f*ck” would open sp many paths of thought I must restrict myself before I write even more walls of text

I don't mind. I'm something of a writer (and reader) of voluminous walls of text myself. You can post walls of text at me all day. It's kind of a silly story, and funnily Ylilauta played an important part in it. I've never actually told anyone about this, so you'll be the first.

I started teaching myself English maybe a few months before I came to Ylilauta. Obviously, at the time I already knew some words and phrases from playing games with an English voice over, but my knowledge of the language as a whole was pretty basic. I would learn grammar and stuff and apply it on the go by shitposting.

It was kind of weird to post with my spurdoball, and no one believed that I was from actual fukken Kyrgyzstan anyway, so for a few years I posted with an American VPN, and my goal back then was to write as well as a native American English speaker and make sure no one could tell. To that end, I obsessively used google and checked every single sentence and post to make sure it sounded natural and grammatically correct.

That's how I ended up turning into a burger spy. :^)

>you have to live under a rock
I guess I was. The problem is that most foreign media here is dubbed in Russian, so really I was only ever exposed to English speech in Rockstar games (they never dub their games).

on a side note, I was reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haltija last night, and the page could definitely use going over to fix some of the finnglish, but I'd need a native speaker to help make sure I'm interpreting correctly

I speak Russian natively, English as a second language and I can read Ukrainian fairly well (understanding about 90% of what I read), Ukrainian and Russian enable me to understand a bit of Polish, but not well enough to, say, read a whole article and fully grasp what it's about.

>I’ve tried the same with Italian(s) on 4chan and it’s not as easy as one could think especially if people talk about local stuff no foreigner has any idea about
Yea, it was pretty challenging and I nearly gave up a few times, but kept motivating myself to continue learning and perfecting it.

>I think it’s pretty mysterious that your country spurdo is real.
Yea. I guess my country's population is almost identical to Finland's, but Kyrgyzstan is not represented nearly to the same degree on the global stage.

>Must have felt pretty nice
I have a tendency to grow bored once I acquire a skill or get something that I really want. I'd love to learn drawing, but I'm worried I'll just go "meh, I can draw like a Japanese manga artist now, so what". It would still be cool to be able to draw well, though.

Do many people speak russian over there or is it like an elite language (english in India for example) or just a minority?? I didn’t realise Polish is that close to Ukrainian but it makes sense because the countries touch each other etc

Kyrgyztan is located in a place many people know only thanks to the slightly less factual representation of the region in Borat. It’s near important events but manages to stay hidden. If I’m completely honest I don’t know anything about the place other than that it’s ex-soviet and somewhere maybe east of Kazakhstan. Maybe there’s oil and mountains and steppe and maybe even throat singers

Btw did you post a photo of a lake and a mountain years ago on ylis?? Or something like that. I remember someone doing that and the said person was from a remote place either in or close to Russia. You used ylis and live in an ex-soviet place, so it could be you

Russian is basically the lingua franca here. All kinds of ethnic groups use it to communicate with each other. Sure, you could say it's like English in a non-English speaking country.

>If I’m completely honest I don’t know anything about the place
It's just a much smaller Kazakhstan, basically. Obviously, Kazakhstan is completely misrepresented in Borat, so I'm not sure if the movie has any bearing on real life, lel.

There are mountains here. Kazakhstan is mostly barren steppe and Kyrgyzstan is much more mountainous. We also have one of the biggest lakes in the world here. No oil, but quite a few huge gold deposits.

> Btw did you post a photo of a lake and a mountain years ago on ylis?? Or something like that. I remember someone doing that and the said person was from a remote place either in or close to Russia. You used ylis and live in an ex-soviet place, so it could be you
It's possible. I haven't been to that lake in ages (since I was a kid, actually), but I may have posted a pic of it from the internet maybe.

That’s what I meant by the Jurassic park scenario. All the dinos are female but they have created them with the DNA of a frog that can turn itself male if needed -> eggs -> baby dinos. Rats can’t do that. My intuition says that amphibians are the most developed animal genre that can do stuff like that, as they have better regenerative abilities than mammals, reptiles and birds (axolotls for example). If the body drops the part that makes the frog girl and then regenerates a boy part you get tadpoles and if you do some scifi that happens with cloned dinosaurs too

Did you know that the reason why dinos could sustain themselves with plants while being bigger than humans who can’t just survive on salad is that they had such a super long digestive system that it absorbed all the nutrients out of the leaves. Cows can’t fit a similar system inside themselves because they are obviously a lot smaller than dinos so they eat, p*ke in their mouth, swallow the p*ke etc. instead to give the food more time and opportunities to absorb. Humans just eat and the food goes through a 6-7 metres long tube which is way too short for salad
